The Brakes

Completed 5/2001

Rear BrakeFront master cylinder

The CBX has disc brakes front and rear, with dual front calipers, and a single rear caliper. The brake overhaul consists of dis-assembling all calipers and master cylinders. There's usually a bit of sugary gunk that gathers in a brake system while it sits unused for years. This was no exception.

I ordered brake caliper and master cylinder overhaul kits from Tim's CBX. The master cylinder kit has everything you need to rebuild the main pistons. The kit comes with the spring, seals, piston cup, dust cover, and clips. It's easy to do, just be sure to have a set of circlip pliers handy. Clean the piston bore completely with a rag dipped in some fresh brake fluid. If there's corrosion evident, use a Dremel tool with a brass brush attached to brush it away. you may need more than one size.

The caliper rebuild kits come with the piston seal, dust seal, clips, and bleeder dust cap. Remove the caliper piston carefully. You may need some compressed air to help it form the caliper. be careful, not too much pressure, and put a rag opposite the piston so when it pops out, the rag cushions it. Clean the caliper insides, paying special attention to the piston seal groove. This has to be completely clear of all corrosion, or the seal will leak. Trust me on this. when assembling, coat all parts in clean brake fluid. I usually mask and paint the parts after assembly. Careful when bleeding, brake fluid will remove paint!

Also, be sure the brake lines are clear. I used a piece of telephone wire to push through each line. I found a clogged one, and had to work it a while to clear the gook out.

Bleeding: This can be a problem. I cheated and used a vacuum operated brake bleeder. Works like a charm! You just fill the master cylinder, and hook the included tube to the bleeder bolt. Open the bleeder, and pump the unit. It pulls the brake fluid, air and all, down through the system from the master cylinder and into a collector bottle. I discarded this fluid, since it also flushed out my system. Keep pulling the fluid down, and watch the master cylinder fluid level. If you run it dry, you have to start over again. Pump the brake lever a few times and continue, the whole while leaving the bleeder bolt open. When you see no more air coming from the caliper to the collector bottle, you're done! This method was well worth the price of the $40.00 bleeder kit. I bought this unit at Pep Boys.
